Socio Drama Workshops for Communities

Problem

The municipality of Stellenbosch asked me to do workshops in different communities to identify problem areas in the each community . They wanted to figure out solutions proposed by the respective communities through utilising sociodrama. I presented these workshops in Klapmuts, Idas Valley and Kayamandi.

What we did?

Different issues in the various communities emerged as we asked the respective communities to ‘play out’ dilemmas. Through discussions and their active engagement, they were able to verbalise the issues and find possible solutions.

Results

“Dramatising the issues assisted them in cultivating awareness and an objective look at the issues at hand. The fact that we tapped into their spontaneity and creativity resulted in innovative solutions. lhat led to a deeper, mutual understanding of the issues and alternative ‘out-of-the box’ solutions.

"Sociodrama is a form of dramatic play, where some individuals in a group act out assigned roles for the purpose of studying and remedying problems in groups or collective relationships. It’s an interactive learning method that allows groups to analyze behaviors, experiment with new approaches, and strengthen bonds through creative activities. Sessions typically involve warm-up exercises, role-playing, and discussion. The role-playing doesn't have to theatrical; it can involve games, experiences, or collaborative art. When used without bias, sociodrama empowers groups to devise solutions collaboratively, fostering commitment and motivation. In businesses and community settings, sociodrama has proven effective in promoting unity, identifying obstacles, shared goals, and mobilizing towards collective objectives."
